In brief
Daniel Markel, a 41-year-old law professor at Florida State University, was shot twice in the head on the morning of July 18, 2014, sitting behind the wheel of his car at his Tallahassee home. He died the next morning. For two days two men from South Florida had followed him: to his sons' daycare, to his gym, and back to his street. The case stalled for two years. Then one of the men talked, and investigators laid out a chain that ran from Markel's former brother-in-law through a woman who had dated him and had children with one of the shooters. Prosecutors said the price was $100,000, paid in hundred-dollar bills stapled into bundles, and that the point of the killing was a custody ruling that kept Markel's two young sons in Tallahassee. Five people have been convicted: Luis Rivera, Sigfredo Garcia, Katherine Magbanua, Charlie Adelson and, in September 2025, Charlie's mother Donna Adelson, who had been arrested at Miami International Airport at the gate for a one-way flight to Vietnam. Markel's ex-wife and her father were named by prosecutors as unindicted co-conspirators and have never been charged.
Turning pointThe FBI never wanted the five thousand dollars. An undercover agent handed Donna Adelson a newspaper article about the murder with a figure and a phone number written on it. Within hours, people who had said nothing for two years were calling each other, and investigators were listening.

Timeline
September 2012
Wendi Adelson files for divorce while Markel is away. The contested question becomes their two young sons, and whether she can move with them roughly seven hours south to the Miami area, where her parents live.
June 2013
A judge denies the request to relocate the children to South Florida. The divorce is finalized the following month, with the boys staying in Tallahassee.
2014
Markel goes back to court, seeking among other things to restrict his former mother-in-law Donna Adelson's unsupervised access to the children. A hearing on that motion is postponed in May and never rescheduled.
June 2014
According to Luis Rivera's later testimony, he and Sigfredo Garcia drive north from South Florida intending to kill Markel, cannot catch him alone, and go home.
July 18, 2014Morning
The two men, in a rented Prius, follow Markel as he drops his sons off, wait outside his gym for more than an hour, and follow him home to Betton Hills. He does not notice.
July 18, 2014Shortly before 11 a.m.
Markel pulls into his garage. On the phone, he remarks that there is an unfamiliar man in his driveway. The person on the other end hears a muffled sound. He is shot twice in the head while still behind the wheel.
July 18, 2014Minutes later
A neighbor hears the shots, sees a car reverse out of the driveway and speed away, and finds Markel in the running car. His glasses and phone are on the ground. Emergency response is delayed by a dispatch error.
July 19, 2014
Markel dies in hospital. Police say publicly that he was the intended victim, not a random target.
2014 to 2016
The investigation stalls. Detectives reconstruct the two men's route from cell records, toll and rental paperwork, and intersection, bus and building cameras, and release images of the Prius on the first anniversary.
2016
In an undercover operation investigators call "the bump," an FBI agent approaches Donna Adelson near her home, references the murder and demands $5,000. The calls that follow are recorded on wiretaps.
May 26, 2016
Sigfredo Garcia is arrested. The probable-cause affidavit, unsealed weeks later, describes a chain running from Charlie Adelson through Katherine Magbanua to Garcia and Rivera.
October 4, 2016
Rivera pleads guilty to second-degree murder and agrees to testify, for a 19-year sentence. His account names Garcia as the man who recruited him and Magbanua as the woman between them and the money.
October 11, 2019
Garcia is convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy and sentenced to life. The jury in Magbanua's trial cannot reach a verdict.
May 2022
Magbanua is convicted at her retrial on all counts and sentenced to life. Prosecutors lean on an enhanced recording of her and Charlie Adelson discussing the approach from the undercover agent.
2022
Florida enacts HB 1119, known as the Markel Act, creating conditions under which grandparents can seek visitation. Markel's parents had no standing to petition for access to his sons.
November 6, 2023
Charlie Adelson is convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation. His defense, that he was being extorted by the men who killed Markel, is rejected. He is sentenced to life the following month.
November 13, 2023
Donna Adelson is arrested at Miami International Airport at the gate for a one-way flight to Vietnam, a country with no extradition treaty with the United States.
September 4, 2025
Donna Adelson is convicted on all counts after a trial in which her estranged son testified about her. She is sentenced to life on October 13, 2025, and maintains her innocence.
July 2026
Florida's First District Court of Appeal affirms Charlie Adelson's convictions. Donna Adelson's appeal remains pending.
The full story
The call
Shortly before eleven on the morning of Friday, July 18, 2014, Dan Markel pulled into the garage of his house in Betton Hills, a quiet neighborhood in Tallahassee. He was on the phone. He mentioned that there was a man he did not recognize standing in his driveway.
The person on the other end heard a muffled sound, and then nothing.
A neighbor heard the shots and looked out in time to see a car reverse out of the driveway and accelerate away. He found Markel still behind the wheel of his own car, the engine running, his glasses and phone on the ground beside it. Markel had been shot twice in the head. He lived through the night and died the next morning. He was 41, a professor at Florida State University’s law school who wrote about punishment and sentencing, and the father of two young boys.
Police said almost immediately that he had been the intended victim. What they could not say, for two years, was who had wanted him dead.
The only war he knew he was in
Markel’s marriage to Wendi Adelson had ended in 2013 after a divorce that turned on where their sons would live. Her family was in South Florida; she wanted to move the boys there. A judge said no, and the ruling held: the children stayed in Tallahassee.
In 2014 Markel was back in court again, this time seeking to limit his former mother-in-law’s unsupervised time with the children. The hearing on that motion was postponed in May. It was never rescheduled.
The chain
The two men who drove up from South Florida were Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera. They had made the trip once before, in June, and gone home without finding Markel alone. On the second attempt they followed him through his whole morning: the daycare drop-off, more than an hour parked outside his gym, then the drive back to his street.
Detectives spent two years assembling the route from cell records, rental and toll paperwork, and footage from city buses, intersections and nearby buildings. In May 2016, Garcia was arrested. The affidavit that followed described a chain: Charlie Adelson, Wendi’s brother, to Katherine Magbanua, who had dated Charlie and had children with Garcia, to Garcia and Rivera.
Rivera pleaded guilty that October and agreed to testify. Prosecutors put the price at $100,000, paid in hundred-dollar bills stapled into thousand-dollar bundles, and told juries that Charlie Adelson habitually stapled his cash exactly that way. After the murder, Magbanua began receiving paychecks from the Adelson family’s dental practice, signed by Charlie’s mother, Donna.
The bump
By 2016 investigators believed they understood the structure but could not prove it. So they frightened it. An undercover FBI agent approached Donna Adelson near her home, referred to Markel’s murder and asked for $5,000, as though he were a blackmailer connected to the men who had done the job.
The money was never the point. Within hours Donna had called Charlie, Charlie had reached Magbanua, and Magbanua had reached Garcia, with investigators listening on wiretaps. Recordings from that period became central evidence at Magbanua’s retrial and at Charlie Adelson’s trial.
Five convictions, and what is still open
Garcia was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to life. Magbanua’s first jury hung; her retrial in May 2022 convicted her on all counts. Charlie Adelson was convicted in November 2023. Days later Donna Adelson was arrested at Miami International Airport, at the gate for a one-way flight to Vietnam. She was convicted in September 2025 and sentenced to life that October. She maintains her innocence, and her appeal is pending. Charlie Adelson’s convictions were affirmed on appeal in July 2026.
Prosecutors named Wendi Adelson and her father, Harvey Adelson, as unindicted co-conspirators. Neither has been charged, and Wendi Adelson has consistently denied knowing about the plot.
After the arrests, Markel’s parents spent years in court simply for the right to see their grandsons, whose surname had been changed from Markel to Adelson. Florida later amended its grandparent-visitation statute. The amendment is known as the Markel Act.

What the video couldn't include
The trip that failed
The July killing was the second attempt. Rivera testified that he and Garcia had driven up from South Florida weeks earlier, in June 2014, and turned around because they could not get Markel alone. Markel never knew that men had already made the drive once.
The television
Charlie Adelson repeatedly joked that he had bought his sister a television as a divorce present because a television was cheaper than a hitman. He admitted making the joke and insisted it was only a joke. A repairman was scheduled to work on that television on the morning Markel was killed.
How the money was folded
Prosecutors said the payment was $100,000 in hundred-dollar bills stapled into thousand-dollar bundles, and used testimony about Charlie Adelson's habit of stapling cash that way to tie the bundles to him. After the murder, Magbanua began drawing paychecks from the Adelson family dental practice, signed by Donna Adelson.
Who was never charged
Prosecutors named Markel's ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, and her father, Harvey Adelson, as unindicted co-conspirators. Neither has been charged with anything. Wendi Adelson has consistently denied knowing about or taking part in the plot, and no court has found otherwise.
What the family lost after the arrests
Markel's parents spent years in court over access to their grandsons. The boys' surname was changed from Markel to Adelson. Florida's grandparent-visitation law, among the most restrictive in the country at the time, was later amended and the amendment carries Markel's name.
